Different types of tillage implements are extensively used in farming activities to enhance agricultural production, for example, soil fertility, increasing infiltration rate, reducing erosion and improving plant rooting. Most common types of implements used in soil tillage are - disc plough, mould-board plough, rotavator, harrow etc.
The farmers in India are widely using primary tillage equipment like disc plough, mould-board plough and sub-soiler etc. to break the soil, prepare a seedbed and to incorporate crop residues into the soil.
The use of mould-board plough has increased in farming to impact soil characteristics, thus also needs necessary attention. The purpose of using mould-board plough in farming is to enhance the finer soil characteristics by improving the quantity of finer particles than sands.
How does it work?
A Mould board plough consists of large blades with curved edges that dig deep into the soil, as pulled over the land by a tractor, cuts a row, turning and aerating the soil all at the same time, leaving a furrow for planting with a rise of loose and aerated soil on the side. It also helps in mixing the fertilizer spread before ploughing over the soil in the process.
A reversible plough also known as reversible mould-board plough turns furrow slice to the right or left side when taking rounds. These plough have two sets of different bottoms that allow all furrows turned towards the same side of the land by using one bottom for one way of round and the other bottom on returning.
These two sets of the base are so mounted in such a way that they can be elevated or lowered independently or also rotated the length of an axis. Use of reversible plough has the advantage that they neither distress the status of the land nor leave dead furrows or back furrows in the mid of the field.
